Mideo Cruz "Poleteismo" Pictures at CCP Exhibit Kulo

Since the CCP installation of Mideo Cruz's work is closed to the public with finality, people are starting to look for Mideo Cruz "Poleteismo" pictures at the CCP exhibit online.

I found this at Mideo Cruz's Facebook page at the album "Poleteismo". I have posted the most significant and most discussed works of Mideo Cruz for that matter. While we both have our own opinions to tell, you be the judge. Hit the comments box below for reactions, negative or positive.

I believe in freedom of speech and expression, but we must both agree that these freedoms are not absolute. Saying otherwise is tantamount to anarchy in modern society. I can do an extensive take on this, but there are too many cooks. It will definitely spoil the broth.

Anyway, do you think that these items are sacriligeous, or would you call them "art"? Personally, I won't. But like I said, you be the judge. Voice out your opinions below on  Mideo Cruz's "Poleteismo" pictures at CCP exhibit Kulo.

'Till my next installment,

  2. ...as a Thomasian, I despise these set of work displayed in public!...can it even be classified as work of art?...i beg to disagree! In the first place, having the skills/talents of an artist is a gift from our Almighty God! & this man could have forgotten about it!

Lord Jesus, have mercy on us!

  9. This is a work of an insane man masking as an artist, He is an example of an individual with unresolved childhood and venting his frustrations on things he knew people will take notice off, He wants attention, He can also be a pervert expressing his malicious fantasies

  16. Artist din ako and I don't like this artwork. Sabi nga nila, freedom of expression daw eto. What you did was obvious. Masyado nyo dinidibdib ang napagaralan nyo at yang freedom of expression nyo.

You don't have to be intelligent to know what's right or wrong. Sadly, utak mideo cruz din kayo. It is obvious that the image of Jesus Christ is acceptable not just in the Philippines but all over the world. Its part of our culture. Ket american catholic, german catholic, chinse catholic, filipino catholic ka man, there is only one meaning to this Kulo artwork, at yun ay "disrespectful, ignorant, insensitive and trying hard." mselves as open-minded people but truthfully you guys are the most close-minded people. but we have to accept that this is not europe or america

  24. we have our own sides. Me, I do not support him nor condemn him. If you are a real catholic, you should not condemn Mr. Mideo Cruz for his actions. If he is an anti-christ, try to understand. But if he is a catholic, better yet pray for him to be guided and not letting your mouth and anger in control. If you defend the catholic church. Act as a catholic. Pray for him and not judge him. After all, anger will not solve a thing. PEACE BE WITH ALL OF YOU...;)

  27. Many might say that as an artist... we should be expressive... but we can never be callous. I think advertising made it too liberal... "be yourself" "express yourself". But to all those who keep on bashing him directly, better stay clam, or it might be we who are losing sight of good manners....

  28. Yung art nya parang di original. He superimposed something on the work of other artist, plagiarism at its worst. ART lifts the spirit, the soul of men.It imitates life. T doesn't even come close to satire. It is vandalism, blasphemy. Supposing someone draws the face of his mother with a penis on her mouth, would this artist be too tolerant and say"Hey,its very artistic". O come on...

31. I am a Roman Catholic and I really find Cruz’s work blasphemous and really disturbing but as what we were taught, we have no right to curse him and all. Let our anger not drive our reactions nor let him be a reason for us to sin. Let’s just pray for him.

  35. We get offended by people who do things like this. That, I think, is a good sign. But as many have already commented, it's all a matter of doing things for the love of God. Yes it's offensive but God would not want us all to go bad just because of the actions of one man. For now, it's better that we reflect on the question, "What have I done in my life to allow such an event to happen?" I'm sure we all can get something from that instead of spending our time cursing a fellow human person.

God has enough power to use the bad to do some good. If we all look deeply in the situation, we are just being presented with the reality brought about by secularization. Hopefully we all learn from this as well. This is a chance to ask ourselves what more we can do to get people to love God the way we do because for sure, we have not done enough.

  38. O KAYO NA MGA ART EXPERT! i'm not really defending him but what's important is the meaning behind his work. maybe it's logical. Art isn't just about pleasing the audience. Many artists produce works of art that aim to "scare" or "disturb" the audience like most surrealist artists do, it leaves a bigger impact that way. Salvador Dali has created more disturbing works than this. I'm no art expert but i'm just saying what i've learned in high school so nagulat lang ako kung bakit pati mga fine arts graduates eh sobrang surprised sa ginawa niya.

    ReplyDelete
  39. In fairness, his work proves how people think and feel. I don't support this kind of art and I'm happy to see most Filipino don't accept it as well! I'm still in high hopes for a good change in our country.

  49. It's a sad thing that you're condemning a man for doing what he believes as right. He simply wish for us to see an overlooked social structure that needed discussion, attention. To dismiss his artwork as trash is fine. That's your opinion as a viewer of his art. But to demonize the artist himself for "shedding a light" to the faults of society, now that's the trash of society. You might be Christians and I felt that if I were, I would be offended if only in the slightest. But really, we people should learn to explore the objective side of it and not dwell in our preconceived prejudices and misrepresentation of a person's actions. As I said, you have the right to be offended, to say that the artwork is bad. However, insulting the artist, branding him automatically as insane, out of his mind, etc., is not how a rational creature and civilized society works. He gave us a chance to reflect on our faults. Do we grab it? Or do we continue to live in our blissful bubble of ignorance? I can see that most of you have already chosen the latter. It's not yet too late to rethink your stance.

    ReplyDelete
  50. kulang lang yan sa pansin

    ReplyDelete
  51. Reflect on our own faults???... No matter how noble Mideo's purpose is he chose to desecrate and discriminate Catholic's religious symbols. You could not invoke on freedom of expression, kasi may hangganan pa rin yan, if you know no boundaries sa yong kalayaan, then, there's something wrong with you I suppose.

    ReplyDelete

  58. simple lang naman yan e, we as a catholic, were like one big family and we have a father and a mother that we respect and loved.

God Bless

    ReplyDelete
  60. the title of the work is called "Poleteismo". now i'm not an artist, BUT i do know that poleteismo translates to polytheism (surprise!) so it's not so surprising that the artwork depicts such things.

people who are saying "dapat ginamit mo na lang mukha mo" and all that crap have clearly missed the point of the artwork. it's talking about how we worship so many different things, like celebs/hot chicks/money/material things/etc.. at least that's what i garnered from it. it's controversial. it's disturbing. but ironically, it's true. when we say shit like "ay diyos ko po" or we look longingly at those hot girls on billboards but at the same time, we have a rosary dangling from the rearview mirror. it's some similar shit.

    ReplyDelete
  61. sana ginawa mo muna sa nanay mong image

    ReplyDelete
  62. sana..matakot ka sa diyos...o may takot ka man d mo ginamt sa obra mo na ito...me the lord god bless u..let the lord enter in your heart....

    ReplyDelete
  63. I am a Christian and not a catholic, and I am not offended by these kind of things. I can understand the message the artist wants to convey. My faith is with God, not with images. I don't believe in those images being the image of Christ. The artist can do anything that pleases him, but he must always think of what others might feel. He is responsible of what others might think.

I don't like religious images myself. But I also respect other's beliefs. I'd rather speak about the bible's truth about these things, than to trample on their religiosity.

    ReplyDelete
FPJ, Britney Spears, Images of the Sto.Nino, at kung anu-ano pa."

We don't need any Images... God loathes those images (Deuteronomy 5:8-9)" Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth: 9 Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God,"

(John 8:7) "And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.”

    God Bless us all!

    ReplyDelete
  65. this is my first time to really see the artworks and this is how i saw it: is the so-called image of Jesus still being respected by people today amidst all the other images that swim in your heads? aminin, marami pang time maging online kesa magsimba ang mga tao. mr. cruz simply put out a wake up call, now people are shooting him down. just take a different perspective. you'd understand. don't be hypocrites.

    ReplyDelete
  66. i know we had these "different perspectives" when it comes to things.,maybe this are peculiar for you.,kung nakakaofend man yung ginawa nya.,i think cruz has an explanation for doing such art daw.,

    ReplyDelete
  67. I thought the title of the exhibit is Polytheism? If polytheism means "the belief of different dieties" then he should have included other religions in the country din. Tignan lang natin kung hindi ma-offend yung ibang religions kapag binaboy yung mga things that they consider sacred. The main battlecry here is RESPECT for one's belief...And I think it is a general teaching, whether Catholic or not.

    ReplyDelete
  68. hey u have a wrong and right and your wrong is that like science art HAS boundaries. Science CANNOT overstep the boundaries of belief, religion and superstitions and etc. SCIENCE IS A BIG THING! what more does this rule apply to art?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Yes, Mideo Cruz is telling the reality of human sinful nature - worshiping many human works of art, even the supposedly face of Jesus and Mary- a work of humans which is believed to be the real faces of Jesus and Mary respectively.

No artist exactly knew the real face of Jesus. According to the Bible, Jesus' face is not attractive, his appearance makes no one's attention captivated to him, his looks had nothing to attract of one's attention.

Let me quote Isaiah 53: 2-6 (The Message),

"The servant grew up before God—a scrawny seedling,
a scrubby plant in a parched field.
There was nothing attractive about him,
nothing to cause us to take a second look.
He was looked down on and passed over,
a man who suffered, who knew pain firsthand.
One look at him and people turned away.
We looked down on him, thought he was scum.
But the fact is, it was our pains he carried—
our disfigurements, all the things wrong with us.
We thought he brought it on himself,
that God was punishing him for his own failures.
But it was our sins that did that to him,
that ripped and tore and crushed him—our sins!
He took the punishment, and that made us whole.
Through his bruises we get healed.
We're all like sheep who've wandered off and gotten lost.
We've all done our own thing, gone our own way.
And God has piled all our sins, everything we've done wrong,
    on him, on him."

Let us worship Jesus our risen Lord and Savior in the beauty of holiness in our thoughts, words and actions; and not merely by making his supposed image sacred.

Let us study the bible! We will know more about Jesus..."You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me." John 5: 39 NKJV

    Thanks, +639273392207

71. I was born and raised Catholic but I'm not very religious. I'm a "liberal" 20 year old and I believe in being a part of this vast and wondrous universe. I personally think his exhibit was a bit too much, but I don't feel offended. I know a lot of conservative, very pious Catholics were, but this whole reaction to him, is again, toooo much. His exhibit was already put down and a lot of flack was given to him. Let's not fight fire with fire if you call yourselves Christians.

    ReplyDelete
  72. It's very simple. Those religious images are sacred to say the least. They are meant to be respected. That's how we study them especially as Catholics right? He's even a UST student. So why would you ruin or disorganize an image that we have been respecting for so long just to tackle some social issues? Yes, it's obviously blasphemy.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  74. There's always a reason beyond every work. I'm not an artist and I can't say wether that art work Mideo Cruz made is right nor wrong. If we Filipinos are brilliant enough to look and examine his art works clearly, we could definitely understand what it means. I, personally think that his work shows how chaotic our nation is and how dirty the politics are. This is just a reminder for us, as a Catholic and as a citizen to start a better life.

  75. As a CPP exhibit, Kulo is not that great, but what'z amazing is the reaction of the "Christians" and "moralist" to the "art-installation".
Lets not forget that advance thingkers of the time/scientists who once draw a "round" Earth and went against the prevailing social belief and "the church's" belief that the world is flat and the earth is the center of the universe received the same ridicule.
For peat's sakes, they even branded them as heretics and burn them in stakes. Where are those church leaders who ordered such inhumane punishment for not "going with the flow" or not being "patay na hipon"???? some of them are revered as Saints?
I admire "kulo" as a great tool for slapping the face of many members of our hypocritical society. I hope that subjects like this should not drive outward rage but drive an inward look at ourselves and maybe, just maybe,,,drive change to the society.

  76. even if i'm not catolic/christian i think his works of art doesn't know the word RESPECT

  77. RESPECT?????
I think this work has been misused many times to cover our sensitivities and because we are not ready to face that other people may think different.
"Lets get our of our shells" and face the world with a perspective that others will be different and we ought to respect people who doesn't have the same belief as ours. Tough world??? yes its really a tough wold out there and we need to "stomach" it and lets not hide behind such BS as "RESPECT"

  85. Those who are offended are those who give high regards to images. Images that God himself hates. They are narrow minded and cannot decipher what Mideo's art really mean. His art is weird to look at, but it is full of meaning.

These narrow minded people are hypocrites who won't accept their own sinful self and would point their fingers on other people. Jesus once said: "Those who have not sinned, throw the fist stone." Sige pa, pagpatuloy niyo lang... you are not just offending the artist, but also God himself.

  86. I am sick and tired of this BS! Both sides would never shut up! Kasi pinapatamaan nyo din sarili nyo by saying those words. Ma pa pro ka man o anti. The issue is not about what the artwork meant. Its about the way it was portrayed! You pro-MC people claims you are open-minded. Well the truth is that you are narrow minded kasi masyado nyo pinapalaki ang issue. Masyado kayong matatalino at lahat nalang kailangan nyong idefend. Eh ang issue lang naman yung RESPEcT to other religions. Not the meaning of the work. Dumbass! Goodjob!

  87. The juxtaposition of the "sacred" and the profane in a "crude," blatant, and colorful way is the perfect expression of our society. One need only contemplate jeep art, or greet the local parish priest's mistress at the rectory door, or watch movies starring high-ranking politicians. And we boast that these all represent our values or pass as our saints. The artist has shown us for what we are. The crude, blatant, and "colorful" reaction to his work actually confirms it.

  92. We shoul always remember that we do not live in unanimous belief, and all kinds of religion, to supernatual or empirically materialistic, they are both arts of intelligence. Inspite of infinite differentiation about politics and art, nature and science, there is on truth that binds us all as consequence of inevitable social coexistence--- democracy. Without the true sense of democracy, existence of humanity shall be temporary or endless hell on earth due to abusive enacting of personal liberties. We have ideals as foundation of our individuality known as personal religions. God became the most common religion, to a supernatural entity. Moreover, democracy is also a religion, compulsory that we ought to submit for peaceful and orderly community. Democracy is too a social religion of people in reality that we should have faith with. And the people can only achieve a democratic society in optimum equilibrium, save us and the future generation from pool of political crisis by understanding and acceptance of the sense of respect and equality, which is the heart of democracy.

  98. I have been intrigued by this artwork for a few weeks already. Being a fan of visual arts and being an artist myself, I have always tried my best to keep an open mind when it comes to analyzing art. I believe that self expression needs no religion cause religion is a barrier of self expression and for weeks I have been thinking if this work of art should be understood and considered and it leads me to one question.

Would you want your loved ones and/or people you highly respect to have a huge wooden dick installed on their photos? The answer would be pretty obvious.

Diba tama?

    Isipin nyo to.

Bawal paglaruan. Dahil pangit tingnan kung paglaruan. Dahil sumisimbolo yan ng pananampalataya.

  114. Polytheism: medeo should have depicted different deities worshiped by filipinos according to their respective religions/beliefs. e.g vandalizing as well Buddha,Mohamed, and even Rizal because Rizal is also worshiped by some filipinos. That's polytheism.

One can express his thoughts and emotions in arts. One can even express his criticisms against a government leadership so goes the song, "hangga't may tatsulok...etc" but there is never any mentioned of any term in the song with malicious meaning like pig or crocodile.

Polytheism of medeo is suspicious as not actually polytheism, but intended to shaken if not ruin the Catholic faith in particular and Christianity in general. There may not be wrong if the exhibit is to awaken the faithfuls on the reality of division among Christians because it is true that registered Christian denominations all over the world is already more than 20thousand, but it singled out to Catholic leadership mocking no less than the pope and the bishops.

Now, intelligent artists glorifying medeo, is it not malicious to depict a Philippine leadership when out of your anger you portray a horned crocodile with a pig tummy whose neck is chained and decorated with peso and dollar bills? Try doing that and have it exhibited at ccp, let us see if ccp would have the courage to have it displayed. Why not? Do that and assert freedom of expression!

The same question, is it not malicious to depict a vandalized Christ the King image, Christ image vandalized with ashtray-penis out of your anger against the Catholic leadership? Are the subjects (bishops, priests) of your vandalism not real persons? Sabihin nyo ngayon, walang galit si medeo no'ng ginawa nya yon some 10 years ago. Sabihin nyo it's a pure intellectual product, no malice whatsoever baka mailigtas nyo si medeo from the teeth of the law.

But if you along with medeo can dare portray a horned croc..(as mentioned above)have it displayed at ccp and then with all your intelligence assert"it's an art, it's an expression..freedom! saka sabihin nyo sa mga pupuna sa inyo ang bababaw nyo!Go deeper!Sige! And people will say, "di lang kayo nakagagaling, napakatatapang pa".

Bar practicing people, Christians and non-Christians alike, consider this one as one among the many best bar tests (so simple as it may)

  130. what? medyo a Luther in the 21st century? polytheism? polytheismohin nyo ka-ugok ninyo! the work is obviously deliberately done to demean Christians esp. the Catholic leadership. It's more of a propaganda intended to destroy the Catholic church? It's faithfuls are deceived "kuno" a show of self-righteousness who by his obsession to be an agent of change/reform portray the many evil "kuno" of the Christians esp the Catholic. That Catholic faithfuls are deceived "kuno" by the church's indoctrination.

Within the 2,000 years of Christianity's existence, about 30,000 denominations/sects were sprouting like wild mushrooms all claiming to be the true church founded by Jesus Christ, even into endless word war-fighting each other.

Tsk,tsk. no! he must not be Luther in any way for Luther despite his bitterness over the church's leadership never was into defiling any of the church's leaders during his time. masyado na po yatang demonic si medyo para maging Luther sa makabagong panahon.

sige na nga, like na nga lang tayo ni medyo at tayo na sa medyo reform movement baka nga later magtatayo ito ng kanyang eglesia. bagay din e dahil full of righteousness ito, see? with his arts brilliance he was able to portray that works requiring transcendental minds to appreciate and understand the message. masyadong malalim.

  131. Freedom of expression may not be absolute but so is your right to your religion. Is there even a right to not be offended? Considering that the Philippines is a democratic nation, people should be free to say what they want to say. That, in fact, is the very characteristic of a democracy. Even if the nation is predominantly catholic, it's not totally catholic. There are other sectors in society who're not Catholic. Any religion should not be the identity of this country. Even if freedom of expression is upheld, it will not result to anarchy if people understand that respect to each others beliefs and identities should exist. :)

  136. Christianity is religion. It is obviously called Christianity as it was founded by Jesus Christ-the figure adored and revered by Christians (at least the true ones because there are also who are making religion a business). So to say, there is only one Christian religion i.e Christianity. You said it's good to reflect and make our hearts and minds open for reformation/change and accept that the religion we used to lived is at the very start wrong. But which do you think among the about 30,000 christian denominations is right? There already was a time when Martin Luther bitterly criticizing the Catholic Church in the 14th-15th century and was even presenting a 7-point must reformation of the church. When Luther was right, then the church he founded must the correct one! The original Ana Baptist movement in the early 14th century, a few years of Luther, assuming that was also correct, then the Baptist and the Lutheran churches must be correct? But why christian religions (assuming that like me you also consider these as religions)sprouted and may still be sprouting like wild mushrooms?Have you reflected on this? There are even religions who are in word war airing their wars even in radio and television! What do you mean "our religion" that is already wrong at the very start, Christian religion? or Catholic religion? If Christian religion is wrong, then Jewish and Islam and other world's major religions must be correct? Assuming that what you referred to is The Catholic religion, then again which do you think among about 30,000 is correct? Baptist church? Lutheran church? Take note, Luther never made any act defiling the Catholic leadership during his time. Sad to say it's the later ones (religions in the nineteenth century that I described sprouted like wild mushrooms) are the religions where we can find individuals who bitterly are criticizing the church even to the extent of demeaning and even defiling the leadership.

May the thoughts above becomes worth reflecting.

  138. the more you think there's no God, the greater the proof of God's existence the fact that he exist in your mind. You need not think of God if He's not in your mind. Anyway, for us who believes in God had nothing to lose, we just do not know for those who do not

medyo and those who are pro-medyo better sing, "The great pretender".. Pretend to be "mulat". when wow! for more a thousand years, with thousand of great men who passed away trying to answer similar if not same question, "why does man trying to do good?", a pretender sprout amplifying his righteousness and bitterly criticizing others. Can the righteousness of this medyo ano comparable to the righteousness of Confucius?Or he's just another psycho-emotionally disturbed/problematic person expressing his frustration in the world thru his vandals prejudicial-minded artists called arts?

  140. haha..ang bababaw nyo..kung sa imahe lang nasusukat ang relihyon nyo, wala kayong karapatang manghusga at magsabi ng salitang blasphemy o kalapastangan sa simbahan.did you see the whole exhibit?it wasn't supposed to be looked at part by part.it was to be taken as a whole.none of the more educated countries judged his work the way most closed-minded folk Catholics--not Roman--did..the whole thing was supposed to show what he sees is the more prevalent religion in the country: vices. sex, or lust, rather, and adultery. idolatry (see the images of Mickey Mouse and Britney Spears). and not to mention, illiteracy. I'm sure a lot of you will be reacting to this post on the farthest end of the negative spectrum. most of the religious and hypocrite populace will. so many of us come to church on Sundays and go to the horse race afterwards. or the cock derby. or the malls. and so many haven't even read the bible. I've only read most of the Book of Genesis and finished the book of Revelation and i'm not hiding that fact. to say whether it was art or not isn't the issue. fact is, this part of the exhibit just struck a nerve on this very sick country and its people just don't know how to react to it in an adult manner. have you read the Noli and El Fili? Those're where Rizal has written his views on the Filipino people's concept of religion: shallow. wake up people.

  141. Mideo's exhibit is an art. First, art in general has no rule or standard because if it has, then art cannot express itself. Art is an expression of one's self whether other people like it or not. Apparently interpretation to art is relative, it is the subjectivism of the person that jusges whether it is pleasing to his/her eyes or not. However, we cannot deny that this is an art form.

I think mideo didnt stepped any people, because basically it was exhibited in the cultural center of the philippines that is an art institution. I mean, he did not do it inside the church religous places.
