Nokia X, X+, and XL Unveiled, Budget Android Phones with Modest Specs

Nokia was surely among the top ringers at the recently concluded MWC 2014, and one of the reasons they were are their (forked) Android triumvirate: the heavily leaked Nokia X, the Nokia X+, and the bigger Nokia XL. This comes as the Finnish company aims for budget-conscious markets and partly because of the success of their entry-level Lumias.

The Nokia X series sports its own OS, the Nokia X Software Platform. It's a combination of Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean bearing a heavy Windows Phone 8-esque UI (initial reports suggest that the devices suffer from slowdowns because of the inefficiency of Jelly Bean on lower end devices, i.e. 4.4 KitKat should've been used instead), lacks Google Apps support (as it would be bundled with Microsoft services), and would feature its own store, the Nokia Store, among others, akin to what's Amazon is doing to its Kindle Fire.

With regards to specifications, the only defining factor amongst Nokia's Android trio are the cameras, the memory sizes, and the displays. The X and the X+ only differ in memory; the X sports 512MB RAM while the X+ has 768MB. Meanwhile, the XL boasts the same specs, but only with a larger 5-inch display and a front-facing camera. The smartphones all sport dual-core processors, IPS LCD WVGA displays, and modest battery capacities. One thing though: There are no Carl Zeiss optics to be found here. The X series cameras are as low as 3-megapixels and as high as 5-megapixels.

The release dates of the Nokia X smartphones are yet to be disclosed, but expect these to get launched at budget markets this the 2nd or 3rd quarter of the year at around P7,000 up to P10,000.

As with the devices themselves, let's just hope they're not half-baked products that just needed to see the light of day. Admittedly, they're outdated software and hardware-wise, they have nothing to brag about, but one thing they could sell to are the masses, and if there's demand, there probably be would supply.
